Post-Pandemic Learning Loss in Students
The day of 24th March 2025 marks five years since the COVID-19 pandemic affected India with a lockdown. As months turned into years, the consequences became evident. Foundational skills in subjects like mathematics and language suffered as students missed out on classroom interactions that help solidify concepts. The absence of peer learning and extracurricular activities led to a decline in social and cognitive development. Many students, especially younger ones, found it difficult to stay engaged, leading to lower retention and comprehension. For those pursuing higher education, especially in technical fields, the lack of hands-on experience created gaps that could not be filled through virtual means.
To bridge this learning loss, it is essential to focus on structured remediation. Schools and colleges must implement targeted interventions, such as additional learning hours, small-group tutoring, and personalized teaching methods. Technology should be used effectively, not just as a substitute for traditional classrooms but as an enhancement to make learning more interactive. Encouraging peer discussions and collaborative projects can help rebuild lost social skills. Mental well-being should also be prioritized, as many students have faced anxiety and stress due to academic pressure. Addressing these issues with proper guidance and support will ensure that students can recover from the setbacks and move forward with a stronger, more resilient approach to learning.
